It capped a campaign that had already included an assassination attempt, a late candidate switch, and one of the most closely watched races in the country's recent history. However any one person felt about the outcome, the day itself — the lines at polling places, the waiting, the overnight vote counts scrolling on screens in living rooms around the world — is one a lot of people remember clearly regardless of who they voted for.
