A total solar eclipse crossed North America from Mexico's Pacific coast up through Texas, the Midwest, and into eastern Canada, passing directly over tens of millions of people's homes. Cities along the path of totality saw traffic jams for hours before and after as people drove in from outside the narrow band of darkness. For the few minutes of totality itself, streetlights came on, birds went quiet, and the temperature noticeably dropped — the kind of eclipse where even people who'd sworn they wouldn't make a big deal out of it ended up standing outside staring upward with everyone else on the street.
