A section of a glacier in Nepal's Langtang National Park broke apart, sending a surge of water, ice, rock, and debris down the Trishuli River that destroyed the Gyirong border crossing with China and tore through dozens of settlements across a 72-kilometer stretch in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Tanahun districts. At least 1,451 people are confirmed dead and 6,145 remain missing in Nepal, with further deaths and missing reported across the border in Tibet. Thirty-two bridges and nearly 25 miles of road were swept away, including the entire route linking Rasuwagadhi to Tibet, cutting off communities that are still, weeks later, hard to reach.
