U.S. military forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores during a large-scale operation in Venezuela, with Maduro subsequently charged with narco-terrorism and drug trafficking offenses. It followed years of rising tension and sanctions between Washington and Caracas, and it ended, abruptly, more than a decade of Maduro's rule over a country that had spent much of that time in economic and political crisis. Whatever any one person's view of the operation itself, the news broke in the first days of a new year in a way nobody had specifically predicted, even amid a lot of prior speculation about what might eventually happen to his government.
