The Winter Olympics opened in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, marking the first time in Olympic history that a single Games' ceremonies were spread across multiple cities at once — Milan, Cortina, Livigno, and Predazzo all hosted parts of the opening. It was also the first Winter Games held in Italy since Turin in 2006, and the first time Milan's San Siro stadium, better known for football, hosted an Olympic opening ceremony. For seventeen days afterward, the Alps around two very different Italian towns — one a fashion capital, one a small mountain resort — became the center of the world's attention at once.
