The FIFA World Cup kicked off with a record 48 teams for the first time, co-hosted across three countries — the United States, Canada, and Mexico — for the first time in the tournament's history. The opening match was played in Mexico City, a country making its third turn hosting the tournament. With matches spread across sixteen host cities in three countries and a much longer group stage to accommodate the expanded field, it was, by scale alone, the biggest World Cup ever played, and the opening kickoff was the first moment that scale became real rather than theoretical.
