The polls closed and most forecasts still pointed one way, so when the results started coming in the other direction overnight, a lot of people went to bed expecting one outcome and woke up to a different country. "Leave" had won, 51.9% to 48.1%, and by morning the pound had dropped to a 31-year low, a prime minister had announced he was resigning, and nobody — including some people who'd voted for it — seemed fully sure what came next. It's one of those referendums where the vote itself took a day, and living with what it meant took years.
