Physicists at CERN announced they had found a particle consistent with the Higgs boson — the piece of the Standard Model of physics that explains why other particles have mass at all, theorized back in 1964 and searched for ever since. The announcement came from two separate experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, each independently reaching the statistical threshold physicists consider a genuine discovery rather than a fluke. Peter Higgs, who had proposed the particle nearly fifty years earlier, was in the audience and was reportedly moved to tears when the results were shown.
