President Obama announced late at night, U.S. time, that Osama bin Laden had been killed in a raid on a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, nearly ten years after the September 11 attacks he had orchestrated. Crowds gathered outside the White House and at Ground Zero within the hour, chanting and singing the national anthem in a moment that felt to many like an ending a decade in the making. It was, for a lot of people who remembered 2001 clearly, one of the only times those two dates felt directly connected in real time.
