The earthquake lasted less than a minute and left Port-au-Prince unrecognizable. Hospitals, schools, and the presidential palace — concrete buildings that weren't built for this — came down all at once, in a country already short on almost everything it needed to respond. Estimates put the death toll above two hundred thousand people, among the deadliest earthquakes ever recorded. What people who were there remember most is the days of near-silence afterward, listening for anyone still under the rubble, and the months of international aid convoys that followed trying to rebuild a capital from close to nothing.
