Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States on the steps of the Capitol, in front of a crowd estimated at close to 1.8 million people on the National Mall — a crowd often cited as the largest ever for an inauguration. It happened just over two months after his election win the previous November, and served as the formal moment the country's first Black presidency actually began, even for people who had already been living with the result for weeks.
