Two massive earthquakes hit southeastern Turkey and northern Syria within hours of each other, in the middle of the night, in the cold of February. Whole apartment blocks came down on people while they slept. The death toll passed fifty thousand across both countries before the search efforts wound down, making it one of the deadliest earthquakes of the century. What people remember is the cold — rescue workers and survivors alike, out in freezing temperatures for days, still listening for tapping under the concrete.
