The fire started in the evening and by the time it was under control, Notre-Dame's spire and most of its roof were gone. People lined the bridges over the Seine and just watched, some crying, as eight hundred years of the building burned in front of them in real time. Firefighters managed to save the two bell towers and the main structure, and within hours pledges to rebuild had already reached hundreds of millions of euros. It wasn't only a Paris story — the images went everywhere within minutes, and for a few hours it felt like the whole world was watching the same fire at once.
