Steve Jobs walked on stage at Macworld and spent about an hour introducing "three revolutionary products" — a widescreen iPod, a phone, and an internet device — before revealing they were all the same object. Nobody in the audience had touched anything like it yet; it wouldn't ship for another five months. The keyboard was gone, replaced by a screen you touched directly with your finger. It's easy to forget, looking back, how uncertain it seemed at the time whether people would actually want a phone with no physical buttons at all — within a few years, almost every phone on Earth looked like it.
