The first morning of a new millennium, and also the first day on this site's own calendar — this wall runs from here to the end of 2099. People woke up to a world that, contrary to a year of anxious headlines, looked exactly like the world they'd fallen asleep in: the lights were on, the banks still had everyone's money, planes were still flying. What actually changed was smaller and slower than anyone expected walking into it — the 2000s didn't arrive with a bang, just an ordinary Saturday that happened to have a much bigger number attached to it.
